Make a scanned PDF searchable
Turn a scan into a PDF you can search, copy from and edit. Text recognition runs right on your device.
Your documents are processed on your device and never uploaded.
About this tool
OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in a picture of a page. EditMyDocument places the recognized words as an invisible layer exactly over the printed ones, so the page looks unchanged while search, copy and screen readers work.
After OCR, the Edit text tool works on scanned pages too, and PDF to Word and PDF to Excel can convert them. Accuracy depends on the scan: sharp, straight, well-lit pages at 300 dpi read best. Handwriting is not recognized.
Questions
Is my scan uploaded to a server for OCR?
No. The recognition engine (Tesseract, a free open-source project) downloads to your browser once and runs on your device.
How long does it take?
Usually a few seconds per page on a computer, and longer on older phones.
Which languages work?
English and Spanish today. More languages are planned.
